94 year old Eva Firth visited patients across Swinton, Mexborough and Brampton for over 30 years.
She worked as a District Nurse from 1949, and says it was a tough but rewarding job.
She said: "I have watched how things have changed and the way people have been taken care of. Back then things were just done. There used to be waiting lists at hospitals but none were ever extraordinary.
"Everybody had respect for the nurses...we were there to help.
"The technology that's gone on and the information that is provided about people is wonderful now. It makes you wonder how the world existed before all this! Because then, you went to hospital and you either got better, or you didn't."
Eva has been celebrating with current and former NHS staff in the borough - to mark the health service's birthday.
She was presented with a long service medal by the Queen Mother just before she retired.
