Former mining communities are still as deprived as they were five years ago

New report highlights concerns

There's been little to no progress in tackling deprivation in former mining communities according to a new report.

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust's found areas are still struggling with weak local economies, have social and economic disadvantage and widespread ill health.

A Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government spokesperson said:

“We’re determined to unlock the potential of former coalfield areas by creating jobs, building homes and improving the quality of life for their communities.

"Since 2015 we’ve committed over £12 billion to invest in local economic growth through the Local Growth Fund and devolution deals, spent on priorities identified by local partners."
