South Yorkshire set for more funding and powers as devolution deal reached

A landmark deal, unlocking new funding and powers for South Yorkshire, has been agreed.

The devolution deal is set to be approved by parliament, before millions of pounds come to the region.

It will also allow our regional mayor, Dan Jarvis, to make more decisions on transport, education and planning on a local level.

The Sheffield City Region Mayor says it has come at a "vital time", as the county looks to overcome the coronavirus pandemic.

Local council leaders - who have all signed the deal alongside the government - are welcoming the progress.

Rotherham council leader Chris Read says although it has taken too long to get the deal over the line, it is now important that more resources and powers will begin to be made available to the region.

Meanwhile, Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones says a deal will bring opportunities and funding, that will drive forward our area and signal economic, social and educational change.
